How to Fix LS Backhoe Hydraulic Leak
Owners of LS tractors with LB1100 series backhoes, such as the LB1104 or LB1106, might experience failures of the detent cap, located on the backhoe’s hydraulic valve. These failures often cause huge hydraulic oil leaks, leading to downtime and frustration. Previously thought to be operator errors, these issues are now recognized as design flaws.
Unlike the LB1100 series, the MT1 subcompact tractors from LS do not encounter this problem, as they come equipped with a factory-installed hydraulic return line.
What’s Going Wrong?

The primary issue involves the detent cap of the hydraulic system on LB1100 series backhoes. This cap fails due to pressure buildup, exacerbated by a faulty o-ring in the valve body intended to seal the valve spool. Without a sufficient pressure relief mechanism, the hydraulic system’s regular stress leads to repeated failures.
Temporary Fixes
If a detent cap failure occurs, a quick fix involves replacing the broken cap and o-rings, which temporarily gets the tractor back up but does not resolve the underlying issue. Commonly used parts include:
- XANE228061 Ring
- XCAP210725 Cap
You can usually get these components from Walvoil dealers and us.
Permanent Solutions
For a long-term solution, you’ll need to choose from one of two options:
1. Remote Valve Kit: Adds a dedicated valve for the backhoe. Can also be used for other things like a hydraulic top link.
2. Dedicated Return Line Kit (XJ2025 models only): Adds a direct return line, preventing pressure spikes that cause the detent cap failure.
DIY Installation Tips
If opting for a self-installation:
- Confirm the have correct kit for your model.
- The installation instructions for either kit leave a lot to be desired. If you haven’t done a project like this before it’s best to have your dealer do the install.
- The installation itself isn’t difficult, either kit can be installed with simple hand tools.
- Depending on how the backhoe was installed you might have to source new hydraulic hoses or fittings.
- After installation, inspect for leaks and double check everything works correctly.
Finding the Right Parts
Locating the correct parts can be challenging. The repair kit from LS is horribly expensive and usually out of stock. However many dealers including us stock the correct OEM Walvoil valve parts.
Dealing with hydraulic valve cap failures is a real pain but it doesn’t have to be. By proactively installing either a dedicated return line or remote valve kit you can correct this issue once and for all. At Ag-Bag Forage Solutions, we are committed to providing the necessary parts to keep your LS Tractor going for the long haul.
